We Received the Highest Score in Remake’s Fashion Accountability Report 2024
Out of 52 brands, we got the top score for minimizing our impact and maximizing the transparency around our environmental and social initiatives.
We’re proud to share that out of the 52 fashion brands assessed in Remake’s Fashion Accountability Report this year, we received the top score for minimizing our impact and maximizing the transparency around our environmental and social initiatives.
Remake prides itself on taking an intersectional approach to address environmental, economic, political, and human rights issues embedded in fashion supply chains via its annual Fashion Accountability Report. With the goal to provide a roadmap for all industry stakeholders to take action and advocate for a more equitable and resilient global apparel production system, Remake takes no funding from the fashion industry in order to ensure its ability to serve as an independent third-party watchdog.
Scoring is based on progress, not promises. Points are awarded according to demonstrable action towards clear and defined goals, like quantifiable headway on carbon reduction targets. Fashion companies are evaluated holistically—from equitable upward mobility in the workplace to the wages paid to retail and garment workers to environmental responsibility and animal welfare standards in factories and on farms.
At Pre Preworks, we believe progress is a process. Each year, we’ve been working diligently to carefully consider our materials and work with our production partners to reduce waste, minimize natural resource use, remove harmful chemicals and plastics, and ensure the human rights and well-being of our supply chain workers. We share a recap of our sustainability efforts on a yearly basis through our own Annual Impact Report where we reflect on our wins while also looking ahead with plans for an even better tomorrow. On the subject of celebrating wins, we are thrilled that in Remake’s 2024 Fashion Accountability Report, Pre Preworks led prominently—scoring 40 out of 150 possible points and ranking as the top company assessed. The report delves into our resource investment, improvement in our operations from an equitable and sustainable point of view, endorsement of legislation such as the California Climate Bills and the FABRIC Act, as well as transparency around unionization rates in factories and setting long-term Net-Zero targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Additionally, the report remarks on Pre Preworks’s strides in reducing packaging waste and sourcing materials responsibly, underscoring our commitment to environmental impact reductions.
While this is one big step in our mission to clean up the industry, we know there are a million more small steps we need to take and are committed to continuous improvement.
"We welcome the opportunity to work with third parties like Remake that are highlighting important issues in the fashion industry and pushing us all to greater levels of progress and transparency through their assessment. We believe that collective action and key legislation is necessary to create lasting impact, and look forward to the work ahead."
Here are a few of the millions of small steps we took this past year, as highlighted by Remake’s Fashion Accountability Report.
We were part of the 3 companies to have taken tangible steps to remove specific barriers in our hiring processes for candidates from underrepresented communities. For example, we are proud to have removed unnecessary education requirements from job descriptions for the past few years now.
We were part of the 9 companies that revealed rates of unionization and/or collective bargaining agreements in our Tier 1 cut-and-sew factories.
We were part of the 4 companies to have set long-term Net-Zero targets and have had them approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
We were part of the 3 companies that met all 4 of Remake’s climate demands by publishing our full emissions, setting approved short-term 1.5°C pathway-aligned science-based targets, setting approved ambitious long-term net-zero targets, and demonstrating a reduction of our total greenhouse gas emissions compared to our base year measurement.
We were part of the 15 companies that have demonstrated that we are investing in suppliers and offering financial incentives for factories to decarbonize.
We were part of the 12 companies that shared metrics showing a reduction in hazardous chemicals used in our garment manufacturing year-on-year.
We were part of the 2 companies to demonstrate that our net-positive biogenic materials usage is increasing, with a time-bound target to reach 100%.
We were part of the 3 companies to demonstrate and report that our overall portion of oil-based synthetics is decreasing (and not simply that our use of recycled content is increasing).
We were part of the 2 companies that have committed to sourcing a majority of our natural fibers from regenerative or beneficial sources by 2025, including regenerative and recycled cotton, plus recycled cashmere and wool.
We were part of the 10 companies that made demonstrable progress towards time-bound targets to reduce the amount of packaging sent to landfills and source raw materials for packaging in a responsible manner.
While we’re incredibly proud of all these achievements in our mission to clean up the fashion industry, this report is a sobering reminder of the challenges throughout the apparel industry. We know there is a mountain of more work to be done and we are committed to continuous improvement. Here’s to being straight-A students that skipped class, but aren’t skipping the work to fashion a better future.
